I dredged this Defyout of the bay, last weekend and it turned up today:

What lies beneath is a very nice (not perfect) gold/champagne dial with the correct, gold/champagne date ring:

A £20 crystal would have netted the seller another £300 or more :confused:

All of the hour markers are a gold brushed finish, the black appearance is just a trick of the light.

Sometimes those squirrels distract you at just the right time.

I agree with your method. I just got this for $75. The case was dirty and the crystal looked like yours. Here it is with a new crystal and simple service, now It runs perfect.

Another example (non Zenith) here...
Gave it a good scrub and polished the crystal. Even the bezel came out rather nice and patinated rather than nasty and dirty.

I love these finds that are basically unmolested and just need some TLC. I'll take these any day over something that has been restored to death.
